This is bullshit, don’t let them convince you. They want closed source app, your photo and ID to make an account, while we already have Mastodon that could replace X.
Nah thanks, I’d rather have bots than rely on a total lack of privacy
W like WHY THE FUCK NOT MASTODON
I sure as hell trust EU consumer protections over american nonsense, and I will be creating a profile there. I’ve already opened an account on a norweagian based social media, that is slowly growing.
I doubt any of these will explode over night, but an alternative is more than welcome.
Which one if you don’t mind me asking? Or it’s only directed to Norwegians?
Norwegians, and Danes for now but they plan to slowly open for more countries. Sweden next.
The platform is called “Hudd”. It’s more locally minded, has no algorithms determining your feed, and is actually trying to focus on creating social relationships. I kind of like it, and have gotten my mom and dad on board.
It’s kind of amazing how calm European alternatives can be, without the constant rage bait engagements, and the shit-flinging. It’s a lot like how Facebook used to be in the early days, where people just shares a picture of a sunset, or describe how their day is, or shares photos from a vacation.
I might move on to others if better ones come along, but we’ll see. There are going to be a lot of them popping up now, because the market is most definitely there.
Thank you, I’m keeping an eye on all these novelties. Was trying a luxembourgish alternative to Instagram, Monnett but was not very convinced…
The problem is that American brainrot have had so long to evolve now, that it will take a while to build viable alternatives.

Every country on earth already has the staffing and infrastructure to self-host a mastadon server. This would be so much easier than trying to rebuild the technology from the ground up. if you see a post from a government run instance, you know it’s a gov official since mastadon can restrict registrations. Could literally be done in a weekend.

W is a Bluesky instance anyway.
Mastodon is often mentioned as an alternative, but it has its own problems. In my opinion, the biggest one is that there is no way to sort your feed like you can on Lemmy. A chronological timeline will always lead to quantity being prioritized over quality. That’s why newer users in particular only see boring stuff. If you bring this up, you’re guaranteed to get some Madison fan saying that Mastodon doesn’t want to be like Twitter, and especially doesn’t want to have an algorithmic feed. But then it’s not and cannot be an alternative.
No reason why a fork couldn’t do that though. Why build a whole new platform? Or why not use ActivityPub?
There’s a recurring problem where the people who make decisions aren’t the people who should make decisions. And many of the people who should be making decisions are too bogged down to deal with everything.
W as in WHY? GODDAMN, WHY?
The Fediverse is here, it works, it is a living ecosystem… WHY REINVENT THE GODDAMN FUCKING WHEEL?
Because if it isn’t commercial, it’s much harder to control and monitor.
The Fediverse also doesn‘t require ID or a photo. Nothing could make me use Witter or whatever under these circumstances.
WHY REINVENT THE GODDAMN FUCKING WHEEL?
To make it more square, of course.
Square and fair enough.
Uhhhh… no!
Sounds like a good initiative, but too X-adjacent, and I don’t believe in freedom of speech on a platform that requires an ID to sign in. I’ll stay on the fediverse.
🤦
Spyware, pass.
