Tibet was conquered by the Mongols in 1240 and subsequently ruled by the Chinese branch of the Mongolian empire. The succeding dynasties “inherited” the “historical” claim to Tibet, though only the Qing dynasty and the Communists were strong enough to enforce this claim. It’s plain imperialism.
