    ! Pedantry alert !

    Wouldn’t this imply that “gearing down” is a more apt choice of words? I mean, you downshift in preparation for slower speeds… Kinda in the same way you wouldn’t say “The sound of the starting gun heralds the factory closure”

      You could also downshift to quickly increase speed in some cases, like when you’re overtaking another car on a two lane road.

      “Gear up” in this context is like, “get the necessary equipment,” in other words, “get prepared.” Definitely missed pun opportunity though.
