    It gets worse. Germany used to be producer of 50% of global solar cells. Around 2011 Germany slashed their subsidies around the same time China threatened tariffs on German car makers. There is reason to believe that Germany sacrificed its leading role in solar production in favor of a few more years of German cars being sold at record rates in China, only now to loose to Chinese producers, as the German car makers failed to keep up on EVs.
