I’ve definitely done this on tabletop rpgs. A one-shot DND character I played once was “Napoleon the 69th.” He was named after and visibly resembled our black cat, Napoleon. He was a tabaxi monk. His backstory was that his family line was an extremely ancient long-deposed royal family. Like a royal family from several dynasties ago. But his ancestors were still obsessed with protecting their noble lineage, so they were inbred to hell and back. He was a tabaxi that was so inbred, that physically…he was just an ordinary cat.

If I made a game I’d totally add Kika and Siegfrieda (my cats) to it. Probably other that already passed away, dogs and cats. Fuck, even my aunt’s German Shepherd, I remember her being a sweetheart.

The game is fun. I easily get lost, but it could be worse (like Minecraft without F3 or a minimap mode).

I finished the game in ambient mode, after dying thrice in normal mode (2x hypothermia, 1x deep wounds). Not having a certain threat helps; I can keep the lantern on, and focus on not getting lost. I’ll retry it later on in normal mode.

The footprints, even if temporary, helped me wonders: once I found a minigame, I turned 180°, aligning my view with the footprints. Then I made a mental picture of the way back, before solving the minigame.

From the credits I’ve seen two cat pics, is the other one (Noire, I think?) in the game too?

im glad it’s working out for you so far! i’ve thought about increasing the amount of footsteps that can be present at one time but figured leaving it as is would help the retro aesthetic AND would contribute more to getting lost. don’t worry, i also made the map deliberately confusing to compensate for it’s small size, so your sense of direction is not fully to blame! i think i wanted people to enter this panic state where they’re freezing and are desperately trying to find the campfire again but just keep stumbling even deeper into the forest. and yeah, Noire is present in the game as well!

I’m impressed by the mood of the game. The way you force the player to rely on audio clues, and then turn off the light to avoid “the threat”, makes it even scarier than just seeing it.
