  • From the article:

“Garrison said his comments represent his own views and not those of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s department. He also cautioned that what he’s doing is in its infancy and it might be years before authorities can reliably match a gun to the machine that made it, if they can do it at all.”

At best it’s a lead which a good investigator would use to find other leads. It’s extremely far fetched one but better than nothing. It’s good that he noted this can’t really be used to convict in a criminal trial. At worst, which is my concern, lazy investigators just saying “the computer is right” and getting the wrong person. The lazy investigator scenario happens a lot with shitty technology portrayed as CSI bullshit, especially when these garbage companies tack “AI” on to it.

  • This is taking advantage of Off-Duty officers and the way Extra Jobs work. You too can hire a police officer if you negotiate with that agency without this app. This is how some small towns are able to get police officers from other agencies to patrol their neighborhoods, and not just the rich ones, when they are short cops. This app is a shortcut to that and yes it is a problem because they are essentially offering a gig job to cops much like Uber or Doordash and seem to be bypassing a lot of the negotiating. But this is not at all a new concept. You know those cops working on the side of the road with their flashy lights on construction projects? Yeah they have been doing that for years.

You now how you fix this problem? You vote out the mayor, or whoever that agency’s top boss is in favor of someone that looks out for the public interest and not their own. Or you read your local laws on how to start legislation to outlaw apps that offer gig jobs to law enforcement.

  • Remember when the Pentagon spent something like 600 million dollars in new accounting software to find the missing 400 million dollars? Something like that. I’m guessing this deal was made when they were still buddies and the Pentagon is just now getting around to it considering the speed of government is slower than constipated molasses. I’m also imagining someone just rubber stamping anything coming across their desk and this is how we got here. If there is any hope, Grok will be shoved into a corner doing nothing except earning dividends for that ketamine fueled moron and and fall in line with the Pentagon’s egregious wasteful spending that nobody in congress seems to care about.

  • The point of the thread was for the influencers to fucking go and get a real job because they’re just rotting brains anyway. It started with tide pods and it’s grown into the exact thing you just stated. All that manosphere bullshit for example. You don’t think all those podcasts, Twitch, and whatever the fuck else today’s teenagers could get their hands on had any influence whatsoever from from all these dipshit people? We were all shitty teenagers so get off that “BRO I WAS A FUCKING TEACHER” high horse. It’s just worse now because they’re constantly bombarded by stupid fucking ideas. Welcome to the failure of the education system! Sorry you had to eat shit daily to find out I guess!

Folks, ask yourselves, what game is out there that REALLY needs a 5090? If you have the money to piss away, by all means, it’s your money. But let’s face it, games have plateaued and VR isn’t all that great.

Nvidia’s market is not you anymore. It’s the massive corporations and research firms for useless AI projects or number crunching. They have more money than all gamers combined. Maybe time to go outside; me included.

  • So, maybe a “human take the wheel” followed by a “slam the brakes” if no input is detected in 2-3 seconds.

I have seen reports where Tesla logic appears as “Human take the wheel since the airbag is about to deploy in the next 2 micro seconds after solely relying on camera object detection and this is totally YOUR fault, kthxbai!” If there was an option to allow the bot to physically bail out of the car as it rolls you onto the tracks while you’re still sitting in the passenger seat, that’s how I would envision how this auto pilot safety function works.

  • The fact that they purposely cripple your equipment with software is ludicrous. It’s even more ridiculous to expect farmers to know IT when they used to be able to fix their equipment with hammers and wrenches. After well over a decade, it’s good to see movement is finally being made to address this absolute b.s. It’s not just John Deere doing this, a lot of the major companies are selling you stuff you don’t truly own. Take your phone for example.
