I have to give it that the Fedora distros are a slightly bit superior to Ubuntu variants but for those that value some degree of not favoring corporate US (IBM/Red Hat) that provides AI resources for Israel’s military to do what it is doing… Myself I tried to like Mint, I really did… but could not… not just it is old-fashioned looking but has limitations with scaling and others.

Now, I do recognize for the initiators is it great! Now, for those that find Mint ugly I recommend TuxedoOS… I find it as good as Kubuntu but without its known limitations with flatpaks. Yes, TuxedoOS was created for Tuxedo laptops but they left it open to use it with others so no problems at all and very well maintained. Now, you may want remove the Tuxedo app that they installed just to free some resources… a 10-seconds thing to do. Drawback is servers in Germany so a bit slower updates than usual for most.

  • In Western countries, anything relate to house maintenance. Since inflation is posed to increase far more in services like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc., it is good to known the basics. It is really not that complicated and the tools required can be justified just by no calling a professional even the first time. Now, do not cheap out in doing a good work, you may no realize it now, but it pays to do so. There is so much content online on how to do something it is really easy nowadays… and you partner will admire you like you never though possible!

America is in a very bad situation in current freedoms and, worse yet, the trajectory is wrong-headed too. However, Europe is in no shape or form in any better situation. The erosion of liberties is really appalling in both side of the Atlantic.

Now, the question is if Americans have given up. Mostly do, specially since it has become clear that millions of voices can be silence with just a resourceful lobby. However, the lack of social net in the US, if a crisis like 2008 ensures again, Americans will demand changes like never before. I see more possibility of real change in the US than in Europe if both are affected by a similar recession.

  • So true… that is why I am quite skeptical of that potential move rumors say… Now, if he becomes aware of how much, much love and recognition he will get worldwide if he does take moves like that it will be stellar. I highly doubt it since he does not seem too bright.

However the man does dream like no other and has proven in the past he does not have problem radically changing bands if he sees it as an advantage (you tell me how an atheist Democrat with such a bad family-values all his life got all the extreme right evangelicals mobilized for him)

  • One little fact not known by non-Americans is that In the United States, immigration officers are granted full authority to operate without any warrant within a 100-mile zone from any U.S. border… they can enter in the homes of 2/3 of Americans (200 million) without any explanation!! And now in masks and without visible IDs… It is going to be fun!

  • I was aware of the atrocities and agreement violations, but not that perspective that colonials wanted to get free from any agreements the British did with the natives… Is that a common knowledge in the academia, disputed or a minority one? It is not to discredit it at all the idea, just to genuinely know its status at university level?

  • What goes in Trumps mind is a mystery… there may be even nothing at all! What we know is he care about money, fame and recognition. If he only was aware of the global sentiment toward him would be of all of that if he really became the person bringing a true change for Palestine and global peace… but he is really unaware of public sentiment beyond the US (that he knows better than most politicians here). For instance, I believe that when he said to Palestinians to move out, in his little mind he really thinks Palestinians lives will improve dramatically without any awareness that this is technically genocide.

  • While Palestinians are being targeted and there is a meticulously calculated campaign for them to suffer horribly, I would not call it Holocaust-like. That is not to spare the Israeli government, it that government were in the critical situation Germany was in 1942, it would have been also rounding up Palestinians (and whoever else mentioned compassion for them) in the hundreds of thousands and killing it in the spot. But we are not there yet… Israelś moral is more like what Germany was in 1940… killing tons of people and expanding in land, delusional of the world sentiment and fairly optimistic on the final outcome so no need to speed up the massacres just yet.

  • I think it is true, but since the leaks (I have a feeling Israel is behind it), the pressure that Trump will be facing till next week to water it down will be horrendous. I already saw members of his administration trying to reassure Israel, but it is unequivocal that Trump is having a change of heart, probably since Netanyahu’s last visit. Now, like in his previous administration that he ordered the exit Afghanistan and scale down from Syria, the establishment completely disobeyed, dragged their feat or simply followed some one’s else orders. Even presidents, with thousands high ranking and autonomous working underneath them, it is very easy to work against the President and even go unnoticed doing so… Once could see this as a safeguard, but it is not in this case.

  • If the rumors are right that Trump will recognize Palestine next week (we have to see the conditions and what borders), but in any case give any credit to Palestinians… I wonder what Germany and France will say would they go down with Israelś government. Israel, as we know it, won´t survive. It won´t be the poor Palestinians, nor Iran or Egypt… it will be their own population as many will burst out of their delusional bubbles and poke the rest. Germany, unless correcting its path now, will end up the same.

  • I see your pain. You know better, but from outside to someone that goes frequently to Canada, yes, the Canadian downfall happened in the last 10 years. But I also travel to other countries and no matter what parties rules, all had a similar fate… UK, Germany, Netherlands, France, Australia… That tells me one thing, or our democracies are an illusion and nothing changes with the major parties or so there is like a virus in the air that affected the West.

  • I have been outstanding supported of the EU till a few years ago… not only a extraordinary powers states are allowing it to gather without no constitutional changes is appalling. It is similar to in the US with the powers Congress keep giving to the presidency… and the courts all quiet. The worse of all, those superpowers are all intended for evil, curtail social freedoms, punish some “rogue” member, or fan a war… no for climate change or really tackled big tech.

That Europeans elected in the last election a completely different EU representation across all Europe and still these new elect representatives select Ursula to lead the Commission again screams the lack of democratic mandate in the continent.

Why I have a feeling these top leaders are vetted by some obscure entity before been presented and no candidates that actually have a brain are available to be elected… it reminds me also how Dominique Strauss-Kahn that was posed to lead the EU was charged in a sexual assault…

  • I hear you, I am worry too. But again… this is a risk at the European level, not at the Spanish one; in Spain, it simply would not pass today. with a different government, of course, it can… Of all freedoms, this one concerns me the least, simply because it is mostly impossible to enforce for citizens.

Back to the original question though, of the 8 requirements, this one on privacy we could leave as a contentious point. But it is because law, it will affect all EU contenders ( and Switzerland will be pressured to oblige too soon after)

Ad someone who goes to Canada every two months in the last 15yrs, I had witnessed the regression not only in the liberties, but also mood of the people. No one would have guessed a decade ago how a country with so much potential and human capital would had become in this state! I would not only blame the Liberal party though… it is something bigger than them, same in the US… and most of the West.

  • True… we should identify those users using just the browser and basic word processor operations. Make sure their printers are well connected and they will notice barely any changes at all… Us, power users, are who actually struggle with the conversion so we tend not to persuade non power users because we think we will bring them similar headaches.

If the user uses just browser and a word editor, he/she is ready since 8 years ago without any mayor hiccup.

Again, that seems to be a personal vendetta of the minister Grande-Marlaska that keeps going secretly against the government policy (like the recently Israeli munition purchase that wast promptly canceled). No parliament debate on encryption or even public debate has been brought up at all. If it does, the minute it comes up, it would be turned down swiftly by the current coalition government. The President has no made any statement on banning encryption either, nor I think he would either. However, he did talk on identification on social media, but he will not spearhead that, nor it is doable to implement for now.

  • Thanks for that wired link. Was not aware of it. It is 2 years old but important still. Now, that is not from the president of Spain, but its minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, a extremist and, I would say, a compromised guy that works more for foreign entities than Spain’s interest and should have been fired long ago. For instance, last week he signed a contract with a Israelś company to purchase munition… the outrage in the coalition government was such that Sanchez had to step in and canceled the already signed contract.

On wanting to stop anonymity, 100% with you, but hard to find any leader is not on board with that.

For real, where do you get that the President of Spain wants to ban encryption?! That debate has been held in Germany, France and UK but not precisely in Spain… like nothing at all. In that talk President Sanchez just talked about the massive and pernicious powers social media have in the society (true) and that he supports the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), at highly misguided and bad thing, but not spearheaded by Spain. None of that is wanting to ban encryption… letś no mention almost impossible to enforce properly too. If digital freedom is your aim, options like Australia is a bit off, you are good until you touch sensitive things for the US.
