I really love that Bo Burnham song about country songs, ever since I heard that it’s all I can hear when listening to country now. So many of the popular country songs follow that format almost exactly, it’s insane…

At my previous job they had a “dealing with overworking” webinar within the first few days I joined. During the webinar it came out that like 75% of the people in my department worked unpaid overtime every week… I only lasted a year there, not for that reason specifically but it was definitely an interesting first impression…

Regardless of the practicality of enforcing this I think it’s a good idea. Most social media is very predatory and do not contribute in any positive way to a child that’s growing up. I’ve seen what especially TikTok does to a young kids brain, it’s almost like it’s reprogrammed to not have any focus and the addictive part of it makes them always want more TikTok.

I mean, three a night is more than you’d want of course but across an entire country it doesn’t seem that high? Dunno what it was like before this year (I hear the occasional one where I live but nothing too crazy) but I’m not sure how significant of an increase this is compared to last year or the year before.

I wish it was like that here in the Netherlands. Instead we get flights that stay more or less the same price due to heavy subsidies and constant bickering about the trains. They’ve already announced another 10% price hike on trains for the coming year, after already raising it by 5-10% every single year for the past few years. It’s insane. Add to that the extra inconvenience of having to cross borders with mediocre connections and I can understand that people don’t take the train.

I hope they do this in the whole country, we’re already getting bombarded enough with those commercials on TV. Don’t need constant reminders about cheap airline tickets on the street…

I agree but I think half is a low estimate, it feels like almost every single EU country is at the very least center right “liberal” at the moment.

While I partly agree with you, I wouldn’t thank that idiot for it. There’s a good chance that what he’s doing (even if it doesn’t fully impact Europe) will eventually drag us into it as well. If he keeps going after China he will at some point set Europe an ultimatum too: stay friends with us and stop everything you’re doing with China or be our enemy. If we choose the latter it might eventually even lead to some form of war…

Let’s hope that doesn’t happen (and most of the damage is contained within the US itself, for better or worse).

Europe would then condemn Russia for its actions (similar to when the Saudis made that journalist dissappear) and Ukraine would be in a ton of shit.

At my first company I was part of a team of about 20 people. In this team there were multiple instances of office romance drama. We had a manager with a wife and kids that cheated on them with a marketing colleague during a company skiing holiday, we had a team member that had a (not so) secret relationship with a manager and we had a colleague that was in a relationship with a colleague from another department and then started cheating on him with a direct colleague.

The first one I don’t know too much about because it happened before I came to that team but the second and third ones I was in the middle of. The colleague-manager relationship was especially weird because to me and my direct colleagues it was obvious what was going on, they weren’t hiding it that well. But when people asked them about it, they would always deny it which was kinda weird. Anyway, after one of them left the company they supposedly fell in love afterwards and are now (to my knowledge) still together.

The cheating colleague was a whole different story. She had a relationship with a guy from another department who was pretty good looking but he was an ass. They were even living together. She then proceeded to fall in love with a direct colleague from our team and ended up meeting up with this colleague in the company bathrooms during lunch breaks… This went on for a bit (and was somewhat common knowledge in our team) before she broke up with her partner and started living with the new one. Pretty weird. Also, there were multiple occasions where I saw her straight up kissing another guy in our team on the lips for his birthday which was a bit strange as well.

Last story: at my latest company I got hired to be a business analyst. When I walked in, there was no way I was going to be able to carry out this role. They asked me to use data to support and advise but there was literally no data available. So I stepped in together with another colleague to work on this for the next year or so, with great success. We had a whole data platform with interconnected data and a visualization tool by the end.

However, close to the time we finished our work a new colleague joined our team. When he presented himself, his tasks fully overlapped with my original role. I went to my de-facto manager (my actual manager was only HR-responsible and was not very available at the time) and asked him if this person was my replacement, I got told that he wasn’t. The new guy then proceeded to start getting in my way every step of the way. I went to him and asked him if he was there to take over some of my work, he said no. Long story short, by the time it came to the time of the decision of extending my contract to a contract without an end date, they gave me a bunch of negative feedback (which I later found out mostly came from the newly introduced colleage) and only offered me a temporary extension.

This got me so frustrated and annoyed that I ended up quitting over it. They were very surprised by that but I did not hold back with my feedback during my exit interviews. Luckily I’m now at a different company that seems a much better fit for me where I can actually carry out work that I like. But yeah, overall a pretty eventful 8 years so far…

The difference is that Europe should be more capable of resisting America. We’ll see if that actually happens but given how things have gone before when the EU went after American companies I don’t think they’ll budge easily.

It depends on the country you’re in I guess but I would say that generally speaking the EU right wing parties are a bit less extreme than Trump appears to be going to be this time around. I don’t know of any EU countries where they are planning to get rid of all immigrants among other things. Tbh, the person you can compare Trump to most is Hitler. And he has compared himself to Hitler too, which makes it even more crazy.

I agree, I watched one about the Netherlands a while back and it was pretty trash. They’re fun videos for entertainment purposes but definitely not correct.
