Too bad it sounds like they’re SMR drives. Else it might be fun to shuck them for SFF servers.

When I was younger, I bought a fair bit of music CDs, mostly for the sake of collecting. To this day, most are still unopened in their original plastic wrap. I no longer have a disc player in any of my computers, nor any functional discman left in my possession, so listening/ripping them is probably never going to happen.
Sometimes I see people complaining about digital versions, but looking back, it probably really don’t matter nearly as much for vast majority of the cases…
Civilian here. There are companies that mine, store, transport and broker uranium. These companies employe people with different skill sets from physical labor all the way up to management. An increase in price may lead to an increased level of employment by these companies, thereby increasing the number of jobs, and play a role in impacting the economy at large. It makes sense for this kind of news to be filed in the business section, even if it doesn’t directly affect most of our day to day.
I fail to see how sharing a news article about someone (supposedly) voted into political office threatening to use nuclear weapon on another democratic sovereign nation implies “we” (whatever the heck that even mean) hate the people of the country.
5 out of my last 5 trips in different parts of Canada and USA had AirBNB costing same or higher than hotel. My parents were headed to Asia for a bit and listing there were also showing at least comparable to hotels. Why’d I not stay in a hotel, have room service, and complementary breakfast instead is beyond me.
Hopefully the new mods will continue to be on board with “News from around the world” side bar mandate as opposed to imposing their vocal minority view of “news impacting the world”. There’d be way too much negativity otherwise, and way too hard keep my sanity in check.
All good! Still lots of links to hash out on Lemmy side as well!
Person I replied to believes the cute mascot image is from Japan, the caption of the image from the article suggests otherwise.

Speaking of archive today; since yesterday or so, I’ve been getting nothing but the cloudflare challenge loops. I recall maybe four or so years back, they were adamantly against cloudflare, and if one were to use 1.1.1.1 for DNS, it would refuse to load or throw errors. I wonder what’s happening behind the scenes?
The m1/m2 looks like poweredge r630 equivalent with v3/v4 cpu and m4 is using scalable Xeon which is one generation newer. All of them are great systems, especially when maxed out. The m4 being the newest is probably the best all around choice.
From power point of view, they’re gonna be “less” energy efficient than consumer diy stuff in that they’re supposed to be highly dense systems ran in a data centre with thousands of other similar servers, to pack as much punch in as little space as possible.
Another thing I’d be wary about is noise… 1U means you’re stuck with itty bitty tiny fans that need to spin very quickly and make a lot of noise, should your components heat up. Again, that whole data centre high density thing… noise isn’t something they’re optimizing for.
A couple of years is a life time in tech, but despite that, I think the one thing that should be the deciding factor is if you’re actually going to need the space in the mean time. If not, waiting won’t make a difference. On the flip side, if you’re going to need it in the next couple of years anyway, then it might be easier to recognize that $320 over 2 years is less than $0.50/day… taking the initial hit and take advantage of it earlier will probably work out great.
