  • I came to Lemmy just looking for a Reddit alternative. I think this is a superior forum system with user scoring and nested comments. But I do love that it is open and federated and I’m glad to be rid of Reddit completely.

I am a huge tech nerd and love doing these things as side projects (but I prefer making hardware). I like making stuff so the things I’ve been making/setting up are:

    • Setting up a R.Pi as a retro gaming console
    • R.Pi Kodi media player
    • Putting together a hotswap keyboard from a kit
    • Migrating to privacy alternatives and degoogling my life
    • Migrating to Linux
    • Making a fight game controller from scratch
    • Making a custom keyboard with soldering and custom layout (and then again for having the same keyboard at work)
    • Building a new gaming PC
    • Getting a synology NAS and going down the Docker rabbit hole
    • Making another fight game controller…or 3

Now I’m planning making a DIY microphone for MS Teams meetings

  • I don’t know anything about iOS, but I use FB on Android for the marketplace. I keep a prepaid sim card for giving a phone number to accounts like this. I throw away the sim every few years and burn the accounts and make new ones. FB is used from a browser in a seperate work profile on the phone to keep it isolated.

This sub obviously has a strong reaction against FB. But if you need to use it then put up what defended you can and go for it.

  • Certainly not an over reaction. If an app sends me an uninvited notification then it gets uninstalled and black listed immediately. Even with apps I use regularly, the notifications are blocked most of the day. People undervalue their attention, and phone notifications are trying to steal your attention. Block it all. Even messaging and email apps can be blocked. I’m pretty sure I’m going to check my phone in a maximum of the next 60 min and a message can wait till I’m ready to look at my phone at my convenience.

This is such an insightful way to articulate the issue. The conversation mostly revolves around individuals (“men are bad”). This is one of the few times that men are talked about in a way that acknowledges the system at play, that they are a product of an environment and society that has shaped them a certain way.

I’ve lost the podcast source that talked about “there is no good way to be a man currently”. Even for someone who wants to be a better man, there aren’t role models or celebrations of " good manliness". There’s no positive road map, only a list of “don’ts” and stereotypes to avoid.
