  • Good lord, what are these comments? This is like a reddit meme page with no real information and if anything a bunch of misinformation.

    Article TlDr;

Cause: The source was a firefighting foam used at the airport since the 1960s, ending only in 2017… Toxic residues from the foam lingered, filtering through the soil into drinking water and people’s bodies – probably over decades.

Effect: The person with the highest had 22 micrograms per litre (mcg/l) of blood. The average was 14.9mcg/l, which would make people in Saint-Louis among the most contaminated 5 to 10% in France… Long-term adverse health effects are possible for people with levels above 6.9mcg/l of blood

Solution: To remedy the problem, the local authority plans to install new water treatment plants at a cost of €20m, and a further €600,000 a year to run. From 2026, water bills will probably rise to help pay for it.

They’re trying to sue the airport that released all these chemicals, which are also extremely toxic to the firefighters (Firefighters’ exposure to per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) as an occupational hazard: A review). Unfortunately it seems they’re protected from the fact those chemicals were “certified” at the time of use so weren’t doing anything under the radar.

    Reverse Osmosis treatment for water

If your goal is PFAS removal, be sure to choose a reverse osmosis solution with the right type of additional filtration stage. Look for certification to the NSF/ANSI 53 standard for PFOA and PFOS from an accredited third-party organization (like the Water Quality Association) for specific contaminant reduction. (link)

Study: PFAS Exposure Through Skin Causes Harm Similar to Ingestion

While skin exposure to PFOA is of concern, studies evaluating the immunotoxicity of dermal exposure are lacking. These studies evaluated the immunotoxicity of PFOA (0.5–2% w/v, or 12.5–50 mg/kg/dose) following dermal exposure using a murine model… The IgM antibody response to sheep red blood cell. was significantly reduced in the spleen following 4-days of dermal exposure (2%). PFOA exposure produced a significant decrease in thymus (1 and 2%) and spleen (0.5–2%) weight along with an increase in liver weight (0.5–2%). Immune cell phenotyping identified a reduction in the frequency (1 and 2%) and number (0.5–2%) of splenic B-cells. (study link)

Stay safe out there everyone. I hope with the new regulations for the EU coming into play that the world’s governments will start responding and if we have some decent politicians in place we might get some actionable movement that will hold companies responsible.

  • I was skeptical of them at first when looking for 2nd-life OS’s. There were a lot of sketchy looking and not really “user-friendly” sites/forums (postmarketOS being one of them) that I avoided but decided to try it anyways. It’s been fun and I’ve enjoyed having a decent OS to tinker with and see what capabilities I can get out of defunct equipment.

If I could get a secure smartphone use out of them I’m gonna be ecstatic. Been staring at phones and GrapheneOS for the past two years but glad I didn’t jump onto something yet.

  • I feel so proud of postmarketOS! I’ve been using them for 2nd life uses for phones, tablets, and chromebooks with very minimal problems. It’s like having an obscure band you follow all of a sudden getting mentioned everywhere and I couldn’t be happier for the project (like the 3rd time on Lemmy this week alone I’ve seen them mentioned).

If you have some scrap equipment throw it on and report your findings! There’s a lot of testing that needs done and information needs to flow. I’ve done a “recipe” notebook with an old chromebook, a tablet for easy video viewing I can send videos to (instead of making my partner come to the comp), and like 3 other devices that I haven’t finished with but pmOS will be a part of it.

Join their testing team if you have devices that aren’t listed! Unlike most requirements, if it’s not listed that just means it probably hasn’t been tested…not that it doesn’t work on your device. (they could probably also use some editors for their text instructions, it’s quite back and forth with links trying to find proper instructions).

  • you think libraries are free?

most public libraries and librarians spend a great deal of their time applying for grants, asking for donations, and parsing out the meager state and federal funds they receive. You can tell that a lot goes on in a public library besides what patrons see!

Did you know that staff salaries, books, other library materials, office supplies, and utilities are funded primarily by city and county taxes? (link)

Taking this chance to say support your local libraries! Even just being a patron will show that it’s a necessary resource that needs to continue. My partner and I just were talking about the library today and how we both used to go at least once a week back in the day but we’ve fallen off in the past decade.

  • Ran into someone with that attitude, their sole purpose on this site is to parrot the same crap over and over. They’re just instigators who don’t really care, should always take the time to call out the BS. In reality, they would probably be voting for Trump if they lived in the states since they seem like the same kind of personality that would falsely believe he’s their savior and a “strongman”.

  • Ty for the Mnemonic, definitely something I was looking for and even responded to someone else with the musical treble clef one. The thunder one will definitely help and something that can be passed onto kids (everyone basically knows the miles one). I’m gonna have to start compiling a list because all of you are awesome and there’s a lot of information on here.

Just wish signs in the states were posted with KPH as well but that’s extremely rare, I still associate maps with mileage and arrivals based on MPH so will be harder to transition that then anything else I imagine (120 miles away so about 2 hours on a hwy going 60 mph which is average for states).

  • Not arrogant, I get the hierarchy statements being mundane especially for someone who’s inundated within the systems themselves. The honest answer to this is sometimes everyone doesn’t learn at the same pace or get upset when they’re confronted with something different. For instance, if I were working with someone that didn’t complete school or had a learning disability, I could see them eventually grasping milli and centi (I still hesitate with if I’m using them properly with MM/mm/mM) but then hekto-deka is another tall order for someone who just wants to get off work and have a beer without the hassle lol. A school yard saying that uses order listing as an acronym for a Mnemoic like EGBDF in music (Every Good Boy Does Fine) would be cool.

Mostly though, it’s more about like the “foot” measurement thing. Something like wrapping my head around the average body weight, cool factoids like comparing volumes of water or like someone commented that 100 is the boiling point, etc.

edit: @donuts@lemmy.world just responded with the mnemonic I was looking for lol.

  • I would like to encourage more people on this platform to humbly bow out and respond with integrity when they don’t know versus the “20 replies of arguments” that drown out the conversation. You might be correct but I think your response is in poor form (unless we’re just celebrating being the lowest parts of social media).

  • I think there’s a little bit of confusion and talking past each other. Would really help if people used actual party names so there’s less confusion but I understand once you bring names in then people are more likely polarized about the context.

They will never get power because of the first past the post voting system

(meaning there’s no hope for a 3rd party, better vote D against R)

I’m not voting for Neoliberals anymore.

    (not voting for D)

I think at this point even saying “opposition party” is muddying the waters. Are they opposite on Immigration/border policy? War? Taxation? Voting Rights?

  • ok, I finally figured out my view on this I believe. I was worried I was being a grumpy old man who was just yelling at the AI (still probably am, but at least I can articulate why I feel this is a negative reply to my concerns)

    It’s not reproducible.

I personally don’t believe asking an AI with a prompt then “troubleshooting” it is the best educational tool for the masses to be promoted to each-other. It works for some individuals, but as you can see the results will always vary with time.

There are so many promotional and awesome educational tools that emphasize the “doing” part instead of reading. You don’t need to ask an AI prompt then try to fix all the horrible shit when there is always a statistically likely chance you will never be able to solve it and the AI gave you an impossible answer to fix.

I get some people do it, some people succeed, and some people are maybe so lonely that this interaction is actually preferable since it seems like some weird sort of collaboration. The reality is that the AI was trained unethically and has so many moral and ethical repercussions that just finding a decent educator or forum/discord to actually engage with is whole magnitudes better for society and your own mental processes.
